Adapter are used to link two Connectors, or Plugs, together.

If you have 2 coax cables with each an ending of UHF MALE, you will need an Adapter with UHF FEMALE on both sides.

As for connectors, they go on a coax cable, you need to know which type of to order the right one for your installation.
